The history of Mont Dore

The Hôtel de Londres, built in the mid-19th century under the name Hôtel du Nord et de Londres, was a landmark. At the time, it was customary to name hotels after countries or capital cities, reflecting a global outlook. With its 199 rooms, it catered to a diverse clientele and distinguished itself through innovations such as electricity.

Le Mont-Dore has its roots in antiquity: Celts and Romans already benefited from the properties of its waters. Its real growth began in the 19th century. Illustrious figures such as George Sand, Balzac, and Marcel Proust stayed there. Mont-Dore's sporting heritage emerged at the beginning of the 20th century with the arrival of skiing. The resort became a popular destination. The Sancy cable car (1936) and the Capucin funicular, a listed historical monument since 1898, symbolize this dynamism.

Le Sancy, Lemptégy Volcano & Vulcania

The Puy de Sancy, the highest point of the Massif Central at 1,886 meters, dominates the landscape of Mont-Dore. Accessible by cable car, it offers a 360° panorama of the Auvergne volcanoes, the Cantal mountains, and the surrounding valleys.

At its foot, the Lemptégy Volcano invites you on a journey to the center of the Earth: this dormant volcano, once mined for pozzolan, now reveals its inner workings through a unique interpretive trail. There, you will discover geological layers, volcanic bombs, and the history of its exploitation, all enhanced by interactive displays. A must-see site for understanding the formation of volcanoes and the geological history of the region.

Another must-do activity for learning more about the volcanoes of Auvergne is Vulcania, a theme park for the whole family.

Hiking

Mont-Dore is a paradise for hikers, with trails suitable for all levels. The GR30, which crosses the Sancy massif, leads you through unspoiled volcanic landscapes, between lakes, forests, and ridges. For a spiritual and cultural experience, take the Way of St. James (Camino de Santiago), which crosses the region and connects historical sites such as Rocamadour and Conques. The Banne d’Ordanche, accessible from the village center, offers an easy hike with breathtaking views of the Sancy massif and the Chaudefour Valley, a protected nature reserve. Finally, the Grande Cascade, with its 30-meter drop, is a natural spectacle not to be missed, accessible via a shaded, family-friendly path.

The Mont Dore ski resort

The Mont-Dore ski resort, located between 1,200 and 1,850 meters in altitude, is ideal for families and skiers of all levels. With its 33 slopes (14 green, 11 blue, 6 red, and 2 black), it offers a varied ski area served by 13 ski lifts. Beginners will appreciate the free Marmottes ski lift and the Sancy Park fun zone, while experienced skiers can explore the more challenging slopes or enjoy cross-country skiing on the 48 km of trails. The resort also offers activities such as speed riding, snowshoeing, and sledding. In winter, a free shuttle connects the town center to the resort!

Other things to discover

Discover the Petrifying Fountains of Saint-Nectaire, where water transforms into stone before your very eyes, thanks to a unique artisanal technique.

For heritage enthusiasts, the Château de Murol, perched on its rocky spur, and Vulcania, the volcano exploration park, are must-sees.
